Digital Desk: IS has claimed responsibility for the four explosions that occurred throughout Afghanistan on April 21, killing at least 31 people and injuring 87 others.

A mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif was targeted by one of the bombs. The blast killed at least ten individuals and injured scores more. According to ANI, the Taliban has condemned the bombings that occurred in Kabul, Balkh, and Kunduz.

The first explosion happened in a public area in Kabul's Police District 5, injuring numerous people, including two children. The second explosion happened in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, and the third one happened in Kunduz live tv.

According to the BBC, the incident was part of a global campaign to "avenge" the death of one of the group's previous commanders and spokesman.

IS has not claimed responsibility for the three other blasts, and it is unclear whether they are linked. A vehicle blew up near a police station in Kunduz in the second bomb, leaving four people dead and 18 injured, according to a police spokesperson.

According to the BBC, a Taliban vehicle was also hit by a roadside mine in eastern Nangarhar province, killing four Taliban members and wounding a fifth.

A device put in the Niaz Beyk neighbourhood of Kabul produced the fourth detonation, injuring two youngsters.

According to local sources and witnesses, the explosion in Mazar-e-Sharif occurred at Seh Dokan, one of the largest mosques used by the Shia minority community in the area, according to the BBC.

At this time, the number of casualties is unknown and subject to change. Sunni extremist groups, such as the Islamic State, frequently target Afghanistan's Shia community.

The explosion is alleged to have occurred as people were preparing to pray. According to images published on social media, the scene was littered with broken glass, and the wounded were being carried.
